SUMMARIES OF THE DOCTRINES
The distinctive characteristic of Christian doctrine and proclamation is
Good News.
Christianity is
based on the Gospel, or Good News.
Part
1:
What is the “Good News” that we have received and are to proclaim?
This is a
crucial and important question, because the scripture speaks of “false gospel”
as well as the “true gospel”. We are not to encourage or cooperate with those
who proclaim “another gospel” (Gal 1:6-9, 1 Cor 15:12-19, 2 Tim 2:16-19, Titus
1:9-13, 2 John 7-11). Paul succinctly defined the Gospel in 1 Cor 15:1-8).
(1)
“Christ Died for our Sins”
meaning that
Jesus Christ died in
our place, suffering the penalty a Holy God set upon our human sin (Isaiah 53:
4-6, Rom 3:23-25, 1 Cor 5:7, 2 Cor 5:21, 1 Pet 1:18-20, 1 Pet 3:18, 1 John
2:1-2, John 1:29, 36, Col 1:20-21).
(2)
“Christ was Buried”
Jesus Christ as
fully human, suffered physical death and remained in the grave until the third
day. The burial of Jesus shows the death was real. It was not something faked by
the Apostles to fool the Jewish leaders and the entire world. It took more than
a trick to rob the grave of its contents. It took the divine miracle of
resurrection.
(3)
“Christ was Raised from dead”
On the third day,
according to the scripture, Christ was raised from the dead. This event
authenticated Jesus claims to be God’s Son (Rom 1:3-4) and ratified the full
power of the atonement (Rom 4:25). This assures the unbelieving of the certainty
of judgment (Acts 17:31).
* IN SUMMARY,
THE “GOOD NEWS”
The summary of
the Good News is that Christ died and was raised again for us so that we,
through faith in Him (Jesus), might be delivered from eternal condemnation and
might live eternally in His presence. In summaries of the doctrines that follow,
note the centrality of this Good News. The doctrines are individually and
collectively in the Gospel.
* RELATIONSHIP OF DOCTRINES
Doctrines
are beliefs about God, humanity, creation, and the meaning and destiny of life
stated in a formal way. Doctrines, while having individual meaning, are best
understood in their relationships to one another and to the whole. For example,
what Christians believe about God influences their belief related to humanity,
which is informed by their belief in creation, and so on.
